Non-Fiction Reading Opportunities: "A Mile in Our Shoes"
My fifth grade students have used Newsela.com to read non-fiction that relates well to Our of Eden Learn. Newsela provides news stories written at multiple levels of text for differntiating reading opportunities.
Recently they created a collection of text sets called, "Walk a Mile in Our Shoes," and we have found them very valuable. A Mile In Our Shoes is a program designed in partnership with Teaching Tolerance and DonorsChoose.org to promote empathy and inclusivity through literacy.
In my class, each student chose an area of focus, read several articles, and then reflected on the area of focus of their text set. Anyone can use Newsela for free. There are great perks to their pro account, which I had when it was in beta, but I don't anymore because it is still way too expensive for us. But all the articles are still available on the free account.
It is a great place for current events, historical events, and they have an every growing selection of collections and text sets that partner well with various subjects in education.
Enjoy! --Kristin
