I teach 9th grade Contemporary Studies. We paired Annie Leonard's Story of Stuff (www.storyofstuff.org) to promote student thinking about systems--visible and invisible. We watched the original version together as a class, practiced note-taking strategies, and then had students choose one of the shorter videos from the site to watch independently. Students discussed the big ideas at the bottom of the worksheet and wrote reflections about why an idea or fact they had encountered was important to them.

I teach a 3rd / 4th grade classroom in Ann Arbor, Michigan. When exploring Global and Local Connections, I was able to find some projects that are using cultural global forces to make a positive impact on local communities. I wanted to share these with my students as those alluded to in the pictures (at least our interpretations) felt somewhat negative. I also felt the one related to music tied in nicely with Paul’s “Stone Music” dispatch as there is something universal about music that allows individuals to communicate feelings and experiences despite language barriers. My students watched the videos, read information presented on the websites and summarized what they saw and read for their Footstep 5 post.
